Historical international coverage of Greenland's first chess champion

Greenland's first official chess championship has attracted international attention. Both FIDE (The International Chess Federation) and World Chess have carried stories about the championship and our first Greenlandic chess champion, Egon Mattaaq from Upernavik Chess Club.

The championship was held online on 24-26 April 2026 over seven rounds with the participation of players from all over Greenland. The online format made it possible to bring together players across the great geographical distances and conduct the first official Greenlandic championship ever.

Egon Mattaaq secured the title of Greenland's first official chess champion with 6 points out of 7 possible. The silver medal went to Hans Christian Dahl, while Carl Fleischer won bronze.

In their articles, both FIDE and World Chess highlight the historical significance of the championship, Greenland's admission to FIDE and the great effort that has been made to develop chess in Greenland. World Chess also tells the story of Egon Mattaaq, who has only played chess for a few years and works as a fish packer in Upernavik.

We are proud that Greenland's chess life is being noticed internationally, and hope that this publicity can help inspire even more people to play chess throughout the country.
